How to size living room tables

Tables should fit both the seating and the walkways around it. A few proportions keep everything usable.

  • Coffee table length: aim for about two-thirds the length of the sofa.
  • Coffee table distance: leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the table, close enough to reach a cup.
  • Coffee table height: keep it at, or an inch or two below, the sofa seat height.
  • End tables: pick a height within a couple of inches of the sofa or chair arm so lamps and drinks are easy to reach.
  • Console tables: behind a sofa, the console should be no taller than the sofa back.
  • Walkways: keep 30 to 36 inches open for main paths through the room.

Mixing materials adds interest: a wood coffee table with glass or metal end tables feels collected rather than matched. Round tables soften a room full of square furniture. For styling ideas, read coffee table styling, and anchor the group with an 8x10 area rug.
