How to choose a fireplace
Start with where the fireplace will go and how you want to use it.
- Wall mount and recessed: these save floor space and can sit below a TV. Recessed units need a framed wall opening and should be installed following the product instructions.
- Inserts: designed to fit an existing firebox or a cabinet opening; measure the opening carefully.
- Mantel and cabinet styles: these stand on the floor, plug into an outlet and add storage or a shelf for decor.
- Ethanol: portable and vent-free, but they use a real flame, so keep them on a stable, heat-safe surface away from curtains.
For electric models, plug directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord, and check the product's power requirements. Keep the front clear of furniture and fabric. Size the unit to the wall: a fireplace about one-third to one-half the wall width usually looks proportional. Style the mantel with a mirror or art and a few candle holders at varied heights.
