Where to hang a mirror
A mirror should reflect something worth seeing, such as a window, a light fixture or a piece of art. Before drilling, check what it will face from where you usually stand.
- Above a console or dresser: choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture, and leave 6 to 10 inches between the two.
- On an open wall: center the mirror roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor, the same height used for art.
- Bathroom vanity: keep the mirror a few inches narrower than the vanity top, and center it on the sink or sinks.
- Full length: a mirror around 60 inches or taller shows a full outfit; lean it at a slight angle or mount it on a closet or bedroom wall.
Large mirrors are heavy, so anchor them into studs or use hardware rated for the weight, and secure leaning mirrors where children or pets play. Clean glass with a soft cloth and glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, not the frame. For more placement ideas, read our mirror placement rules.
