How to choose a table lamp

The right table lamp is mostly a matter of proportion. Measure the table and the seat next to it before choosing.

  • Height: the bottom edge of the shade should land near eye level when you are seated, so you see light rather than a bare bulb. Table and lamp together usually total 58 to 64 inches.
  • Bedside: when sitting up in bed, the shade bottom should be close to chin height for comfortable reading.
  • Width: keep the shade narrower than the tabletop so the lamp is not easy to knock over.
