A coffee table is a stage that has to stay usable. Four objects, four jobs — that is the entire method.
Move 1: something tall
A vase, a sculptural object, a tall candle holder. One vertical element stops the surface reading as flat. Keep it under 18 inches so it does not block the conversation across it.
Move 2: something stacked
Two or three books, largest at the bottom, create a low platform and a second level. Put a small object on top of the stack and you have made a composition without trying.
Move 3: something organic
A plant, a bowl of stems, a piece of coral or wood. Every other object on the table is hard and geometric; this is the one that softens it.
Real greenery if you will water it, high-quality faux if you will not. A dead plant is worse than no plant.
Move 4: a tray to hold it together
A tray corrals the small things into one shape, which is why styled tables look tidy rather than busy. It also lets you clear the whole arrangement in one motion when the table is needed.
Round tray on a rectangular table, rectangular tray on a round one — the shape contrast reads as intentional.
