How to place an 8x10 rug
An 8x10 works in more rooms than any other size, but placement makes the difference.
- Living room: in a room around 12' x 15', set the rug so the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on it. This ties the seating group together.
- Bedroom: under a queen or king bed, place the rug sideways so it extends 18 to 24 inches on each side, and start it just in front of the nightstands.
- Dining room: an 8x10 fits a table for four to six if chairs can slide back and stay on the rug, which needs about 24 inches beyond the table edge.
- Walls: leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
If the seating floats in the middle of a larger room, step up to a bigger size so every piece sits on the rug. Low pile and flatweave rugs are easiest under dining chairs; plush and shag styles feel best underfoot in bedrooms. A rug pad keeps the rug from shifting and adds cushion.
