How to hang and style wall shelves
Plan placement before you drill. Above a desk or console, mount the lowest shelf about 12 to 18 inches above the surface. On an open wall, start around 48 to 60 inches from the floor and space additional shelves 10 to 14 inches apart.
- Anchoring: screw into studs when possible, or use anchors rated for the load. Floating shelves need solid fixing to stay level.
- Weight: glass and mirrored shelves suit lighter decor; wood and metal handle books and plants.
- Sets: stagger a set of three for movement, or stack them evenly for a clean grid.
- Rooms: use shelves above a toilet, beside a bed, in a kitchen corner or over a home office desk.
To style, mix heights and textures: a stack of books, a small plant, a sculpture and one framed photo. Leave some empty space so the shelf does not look crowded. Our shelf styling guide covers the balance in detail.
Dust shelves weekly and clean glass with a soft cloth. If you are setting up a workspace, the home office collection has desks and storage to match.
