How to choose an accent chair

An accent chair should do one job well: reading, conversation or simply adding color.

  • For reading: a lounge or wingback chair with a higher back and arms, plus an ottoman.
  • For conversation: a pair of barrel or swivel chairs facing the sofa, about 4 to 8 feet apart.
  • For small spaces: armless slipper chairs take up less visual room.
  • For color: velvet or boucle in a contrasting tone becomes the focal point.

Check fabric for your household. Faux leather and tighter weaves wipe clean and handle pets better; velvet and boucle feel soft but show wear faster in high-traffic spots. Measure the chair's depth as well as its width, since lounge styles can run deep.

Angle chairs slightly toward the center of the room and anchor them with a rug. Our living room rug placement guide shows how front legs should sit. For pillow pairing, see throw pillows.
