How to size coffee, end and console tables
Getting the proportions right matters more than any single style choice. These rules of thumb work in most living rooms.
- Coffee table length: about two-thirds the length of the sofa.
- Coffee table height: level with the sofa seat or one to two inches lower.
- Walking space: leave 16 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table.
- End tables: keep the top within a couple of inches of the sofa arm height so a lamp or drink is easy to reach.
- Console tables: aim for a height near the back of the sofa when placed behind it, and a depth shallow enough to keep walkways clear in an entry.
Round and oval tops soften a room with many straight lines and are easier to move around in tight spaces.
