Rug Pads

Rug pads keep area rugs in place, add cushion underfoot and protect floors. This collection includes non-slip grip pads, felt and latex-backed cushion pads, reversible styles for hard floors or carpet, and thin and thick options in rectangle, runner and round shapes, some suited to indoor and outdoor use.

Pair a pad with runner rugs or round area rugs, which slide the most. Tip: buy the pad about an inch smaller than the rug on every side so the edges taper to the floor.

How to choose a rug pad

Pick the pad by floor type first, then by how much cushion you want.

  • Hard floors: a non-slip grip or latex-backed pad keeps rugs from sliding and bunching.
  • Carpet: a felt or reversible pad stops a rug from creeping across wall-to-wall carpet.
  • Thin pads: best under doors, in entries and with runners, where clearance is tight.
  • Thick cushion pads: add comfort under large living room and bedroom rugs.

Size matters: a pad should be about 1 inch shorter than the rug on each side, or 2 inches shorter overall. Most pads can be trimmed with scissors to fit. Vacuum the floor before laying the pad, and lift the rug every few months to clean beneath it. Replace a pad once it flattens or stops gripping.

Not sure what size you need? Our rug size guide covers standard dimensions. For the rugs themselves, browse area rugs.
