Where to place a floor lamp
Floor lamps fill the gaps that ceiling lights and table lamps leave. Place them where you need light, not just where there is space.
- Reading: set the lamp beside and slightly behind your chair, with the bottom of the shade near shoulder height when you are seated.
- Dark corners: a torchiere throws light up onto the ceiling and walls, which makes a room feel larger.
- Over a sofa: an arc lamp needs enough reach for the shade to clear the seat, so measure from the base to the middle of the cushions.
- Work areas: adjustable task lamps aim light at a desk or craft table.
A balanced room usually has light at three levels: overhead, mid-height from table lamps and a floor lamp or two at the edges. Run cords along walls or under rugs at the edge, and use a weighted base where children or pets play. A foot switch or dimmer makes evening adjustments easy. Read table lamps vs floor lamps to decide which fits each spot.
