How to size and hang pendant lights
Pendants are both task lighting and a focal point, so height and spacing matter.
- Over an island or counter: hang the bottom of the pendant about 30 to 36 inches above the surface.
- Over a dining table: the same 30 to 36 inch range works; a fixture about half to two-thirds the table width looks balanced.
- Spacing: in a row, leave roughly 24 to 30 inches between pendants and at least 6 inches from each end of the island.
- Entries and hallways: keep at least 7 feet of clearance under the fixture so people walk under it comfortably.
Clear and seeded glass shows the bulb and spreads light widely; metal domes and drums direct light down for work surfaces. Dimmable fixtures let one light shift from cooking to dinner.
