How to plan an outdoor seating area

A comfortable outdoor space starts with the same planning as an indoor room: a clear purpose, the right scale and layered light.

  • Measure first. Allow about 36 inches of walking space around a dining table and 16 to 18 inches between seating and a coffee table.
  • Pick the table for the use. A folding bistro table suits a small balcony; a dining table needs room for chairs to pull out.
  • Layer lighting. Combine a hanging light or lantern over the main area with wall sconces near doors and steps.
  • Check ratings. Use fixtures listed for outdoor or wet locations where they will be exposed to rain.
  • Soften with textiles. Indoor outdoor pillows add color; bring them in during storms to extend their life.

Aluminum resists rust and is light enough to rearrange, while heavier tables stay put in wind. Cover or store furniture in the off-season and wipe down glass tops regularly. An outdoor rug can define the seating area on a deck; see outdoor rugs for weather-ready options.
