How to choose an outdoor table

Plan the patio like an indoor room. Measure the space and leave about 36 inches around a dining table so chairs can pull out, and 18 inches between a coffee table and seating.

  • Aluminum: light, rust resistant and easy to move; a good all-round choice.
  • Teak and other solid wood: warm and sturdy; it weathers to silver gray unless oiled.
  • Concrete: heavy and stable in wind, with a modern look; best left in one spot.
  • Plastic and folding tables: easy to store and handy for extra seating.
  • Umbrella hole: lets a dining table double as shade on sunny days.

Round tables suit small patios and encourage conversation; rectangular tables seat more people along a deck. Add a side table next to each lounge chair for drinks and books.

Wipe tables with mild soap and water, and dry them to avoid water spots. Cover them or store them in a garage during winter to extend their life. Under a dining set, an outdoor rug defines the area; the rug size guide explains how far a rug should extend beyond the table. For lighting after dark, see outdoor hanging lights.
