How to layer lighting in a room
Most rooms feel flat because they rely on a single ceiling fixture. Build light in three layers instead.
- Ambient: a chandelier, pendant or flush fixture that lights the whole room.
- Task: a reading lamp beside a chair, a sconce by a mirror, or pendants over a counter.
- Accent: a small table lamp on a console or shelf for warmth in the evening.
For a dining room, choose a chandelier roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table and hang it 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Our article on how to choose a chandelier size covers foyers and living rooms too.
Table lamps on side tables should place the bottom of the shade near eye level when you are seated, usually 24 to 30 inches tall overall. Put fixtures on dimmers wherever possible so one room can shift from bright work light to soft dinner light. Chandeliers, pendants and most sconces are hardwired, while lamps plug in, so check each product page before you order. For bathrooms and hallways, see wall lighting.
