How to mix and size throw pillows
A good pillow arrangement balances scale, pattern and texture. Start with the size of your seating and work inward.
- Match pillow size to the sofa. Deep sofas suit 22 or 24 inch pillows; standard sofas and accent chairs look right with 18 or 20 inch pillows.
- Layer sizes front to back. Place the largest pillows against the arms, then smaller squares or a lumbar in front.
- Vary pattern scale. Combine one large pattern, one small pattern such as a narrow stripe, and one solid in a shared color.
- Add texture. Cotton next to linen, wool or faux cowhide keeps a single-color scheme from looking flat.
- On a bed, line up two large squares against the headboard and finish with one lumbar.
Zippered covers make seasonal swaps and washing simple; check each product for whether an insert is included. Our guide on how to mix throw pillows has more combinations, and decorative throw pillows lists square styles by color.
