Figures & Figurines

Figures and figurines collects small-scale human and spiritual forms for shelves, mantels and side tables. Look for handmade resin figurines such as an African tribal woman, sets of white and gold polyresin angels, Buddha meditation statues, terra cotta resin pairs, and hand painted nickel metal pieces, along with pewter, bronze and glass accents. Tall slim figures suit narrow shelves, while seated pieces work on low tables. For more decor in this family, see sculptures and animal figurines, or give a group its own wall shelf.

How to display figurines

Small figures can disappear in a busy room. Give them a clear spot and a little structure so each one is noticed.

  • Height: place figurines near eye level, on a mid-height shelf or mantel, rather than low on a coffee table.
  • Grouping: gather pieces that share a color, material or theme, such as all white and gold, or all bronze.
  • Pairs: sets of two read best placed at each end of a mantel or flanking a mirror or lamp.
  • Background: a dark figure stands out against a pale wall, and a white figure against wood or a painted shelf back.
  • Spacing: leave a few inches around each piece so the outline stays clear.

Resin and polyresin are light, so set them back from shelf edges where they could be knocked. Keep painted pieces out of strong direct sun to protect color, and dust them with a soft, dry paintbrush that reaches into detail. Our shelf styling guide shows how to mix figurines with books and plants.
