How to choose a coffee table
Size the coffee table to the sofa first, then pick a shape for the traffic around it.
- Length: about two-thirds the length of the sofa.
- Height: level with the sofa seat, or 1 to 2 inches lower.
- Clearance: 14 to 18 inches from the sofa edge, with at least 30 inches of walkway around the other sides.
- Shape: round and oval tables ease tight walkways and suit sectionals; rectangles fit long sofas.
If the table holds remotes and throws, choose drawers, a shelf or a lift top. Glass tops keep a small room feeling open. Marble resists heat but can etch from acidic drinks, so use coasters and wipe spills quickly. Wood tables look best with a soft cloth and no harsh sprays.
For styling the top, read coffee table styling in four moves. A low tray or bowl from decor and accents helps corral small items.
