How to measure and hang curtains

Well-hung curtains make windows look taller and wider. A few measurements get it right.

  • Rod height: mount the rod 4 to 6 inches above the window frame, or higher, toward the ceiling, to add height.
  • Rod width: extend it 6 to 10 inches past each side of the frame so open panels do not block the glass.
  • Fullness: the combined width of the panels should be about 1.5 to 2 times the window width for a full look.
  • Length: panels that just touch the floor look tailored; a 1 to 2 inch break looks relaxed. Avoid stopping a few inches short.

Choose fabric by the room's needs. Semi-sheer panels filter daylight in living rooms, while blackout and room darkening panels suit bedrooms and media rooms. Layering both on a double rod gives you flexibility through the day. Check care labels before washing, and steam panels after hanging to release folds.
