Rug Size Guide

The most common decorating mistake is a rug that’s too small. Use this guide to get it right the first time — every diagram shows the rug (dashed terracotta) in relation to the furniture.

Living Room

8′ × 10′ — the safe choice. Front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug; the rug extends past the sofa on both sides.

Small room or apartment? A 5′×8′ works with just the coffee table on it — keep all furniture legs off. Large open plan? Go 9′×12′ and place ALL furniture fully on the rug.

Bedroom

Queen bed → 8′ × 10′ · King bed → 9′ × 12′. Place the rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed so you step onto softness on three sides.

On a budget? Two 2′×8′ runners along each side of the bed give the same barefoot landing for less.

Dining Room

Rug = table + 24″ on every side. Chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out. For most 6-seat tables that means 8′×10′ minimum.

Round table? Use a round rug — same rule: 24″ beyond the table edge all around.
