- Location rating: covered porches usually need damp-rated fixtures, while lights exposed to rain need a wet rating.
- Size by the door: a wall lantern beside an entry looks right at about one-third the height of the door. Use two on either side of wider doors.
- Hanging height: leave at least 7 feet of clearance below a porch pendant so people pass underneath comfortably.
