How to style abstract sculptures
Abstract pieces work like punctuation in a room. A few placement habits help them stand out.
- Give each piece space. A sculpture surrounded by clutter loses its shape; leave a few inches of empty surface around it.
- Vary height. Pair a tall form with a low bowl or a stack of books to create a triangle of heights.
- Use orbs in groups. Decorative spheres look best in a bowl or tray in sets of three or five.
- Contrast materials. Set metal against wood, marble against glass, or matte against shine.
- Light it. A nearby lamp or picture light brings out pierced and faceted surfaces.
On a coffee table, keep sculptures low so they do not block conversation. On shelves, alternate sculptures with books and vases rather than lining them up. Dust metal and marble with a soft dry cloth, and keep paper mache pieces away from moisture. Our shelf styling guide shows how to space objects, and all sculptures has more forms.
