How to choose and care for a shag rug
Shag rugs have a long, dense pile, which makes them cozy underfoot but means they suit some rooms better than others.
- Best rooms: bedrooms, living rooms, kids' play areas and reading nooks.
- Avoid: dining rooms, where chair legs catch, and entries or kitchens with heavy traffic and spills.
- Sizing: in a bedroom, extend the rug 18 to 24 inches beyond each side of the bed; in a living room, let the front sofa legs rest on it.
- Pattern: solid shag shows texture; geometric and wave patterns hide footprints and vacuum lines.
Care matters with long piles. Vacuum with the beater bar turned off or use a suction-only attachment, and shake out smaller rugs outdoors. Rotate the rug every few months so traffic and sunlight wear it evenly. Blot spills immediately instead of rubbing.
