How to place wall sconces

Sconces add light at eye level, which flatters faces and fills the gaps that ceiling fixtures leave.

  • Bathroom vanity: mount sconces on either side of the mirror at about 60 to 66 inches from the floor, roughly 36 to 40 inches apart. A fixture above the mirror should be about 75 to 80 inches up.
  • Bedroom: swing-arm sconces beside the bed free up nightstand space. Mount them so the shade sits just above shoulder height when you sit up in bed.
  • Hallways: space sconces about 8 to 10 feet apart for even light.
  • Living rooms: flank a fireplace, mirror or artwork with a pair.

Match the finish to faucets or cabinet hardware in the same room. Frosted and fabric shades soften glare; clear glass gives a crisper light.

Most sconces here are hardwired, so plan installation with an electrician. For mirror height and placement, read mirror placement rules, then browse wall mirrors.
