How to choose and style a vase
Start with the spot. A dining table needs a vase low enough to talk over, roughly under 12 inches with flowers. A console or sideboard can take something taller, and an empty corner suits a floor vase of 24 inches or more.
- Proportion: arrangements look balanced when stems stand about one and a half to two times the height of the vase.
- Groupings: use three vases of different heights but a shared color or material.
- Material: clear glass shows off stems and water; ceramic and porcelain hide them and read more sculptural.
- Empty vases: sculptural shapes and gourd or amphora forms look complete on their own on a shelf.
Cylinder vases are the most forgiving for cut flowers since stems stay upright. Round vases suit short bouquets, and wide floor vases work with branches, grasses or faux stems.
Check whether a vase is watertight before adding water; metal and paper mache pieces are often decorative only, so use a glass liner. Wash glass with warm soapy water and dry it to prevent spots. For styling ideas, see console table styling and browse decor and accents for companion pieces.
