The console table is the handshake of your home — it’s the first flat surface guests see. Designers style them with a simple three-layer formula anyone can copy in ten minutes.
Layer 1: The anchor
Every console needs one tall element to draw the eye up. A table lamp is the workhorse choice (bonus: warm evening light in the entry), or lean a large mirror or piece of art against the wall behind it.
Layer 2: The middle ground
Add two or three mid-height objects with different shapes and textures: a sculptural vase with stems, a stack of books, a candle holder. Odd numbers always look more natural than pairs.
Layer 3: The base
Ground the vignette with something low and horizontal — a tray to corral keys, a small stack of coffee-table books, or a low bowl. If the console stands on hard flooring, a runner beneath completes the picture.
