Why choose a polypropylene rug
Polypropylene, also called olefin, is a synthetic fiber that resists moisture and many common stains. That makes it one of the easiest rug materials to live with.
- Where it works: dining rooms, kitchens, entryways, hallways, playrooms and pet areas.
- Look: power looming produces crisp detail, so oriental, medallion and floral designs hold their pattern well.
- Feel: it is firmer than wool, with a low to medium pile that chairs glide across.
- Indoor or outdoor: some polypropylene rugs are rated for covered patios; check each listing.
For cleaning, vacuum weekly and blot spills with mild soap and water. Avoid high heat, such as a hair dryer or a radiator, since synthetic fibers can be affected by heat. A rug pad prevents slipping and adds cushioning.
Sizing matters as much as material. Under a dining table, the rug should extend about 24 inches past the table on each side. The rug construction guide explains how polypropylene compares with wool, jute and cotton, and rug pads complete the setup.
