How to choose an end table

Start with height, then size, then storage.

  • Height: match the sofa or chair arm, or go up to 2 inches lower. Much taller looks top-heavy; much lower is awkward to reach.
  • Depth: keep the table no deeper than the sofa so it does not stick out into the walkway.
  • Storage: pick a shelf or drawer if it will hold remotes, books or chargers. Pedestal and drum tables suit spots that only need a lamp and a drink.
  • Nesting sets: great for small rooms, since the smaller table slides out when guests arrive.

Mixing finishes is fine. A marble or glass end table can sit beside a wood coffee table if one tone, such as black or brass, repeats in both. Use coasters on wood and marble, and wipe marble spills quickly since stone can stain.

Next to a bed, the same rules apply; see nightstands for options with drawers. For accessorizing ideas, read coffee table styling.
