How to choose a dining table size

Measure the room first. Subtract 36 inches of clearance on every side, ideally 42 to 48 inches in walkways, and the remaining space is your maximum table size.

  • Seating: plan about 24 inches of table edge per diner, a little more for armchairs.
  • Round tables: a 42 to 48 inch round seats four comfortably and suits square rooms and breakfast nooks.
  • Rectangular tables: a 60 inch table seats four to six; 72 to 84 inches seats six to eight.
  • Bases: pedestal bases free up legroom, while trestle and sled bases give a sturdy, grounded look.

Match the table shape to the room: rectangular for long rooms, round or square for compact ones. Glass tops keep a small space feeling open, and wood or live edge tops bring warmth.

Under the table, choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond each edge so chairs stay on it when pulled out. Hang a chandelier so the bottom sits 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop; our dining room lighting height article explains the math. Use coasters and placemats on wood, and wipe spills quickly.
