How to choose an area rug
Work through three decisions in order: size, pile and pattern. Size has the biggest effect on how a room reads, so measure before you browse.
- Living room: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on the rug, with 12 to 18 inches of bare floor showing around the edges. An 8x10 or 9x12 suits most seating areas.
- Dining room: let the rug extend at least 24 inches past every side of the table so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
- Bedroom: place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it reaches 18 to 24 inches beyond each side.
- Traffic: low-pile and washable rugs clean easily in entries, kitchens and homes with pets; save deep shag for quieter rooms.
