How to choose a desk

Decide how you work before choosing a style.

  • Writing desk: a laptop and notebook only. A depth of 20 to 24 inches is enough.
  • Computer desk: for one or two monitors, look for 24 to 30 inches of depth so screens sit an arm's length away.
  • L-shape desk: fits a corner and separates screen work from paperwork.
  • Standing desk: an adjustable frame lets you switch positions through the day.

Standard seated desk height is about 29 to 30 inches. Your elbows should rest near 90 degrees with shoulders relaxed. Place the desk perpendicular to a window when possible to reduce screen glare, and add a lamp on the side opposite your writing hand.

Plan for cables early: a desk with built-in management or a back panel keeps cords off the floor. Our home office setup guide covers lighting and layout. See office furniture for chairs and storage.
