How to choose the right bench
Where the bench goes decides its size, height and material.
- Foot of the bed: choose a bench about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the bed, with a height close to the top of the mattress or just below it.
- Entryway: a storage bench with a flip top or shelves holds shoes and bags. Keep the depth shallow enough to leave a clear path.
- Dining table: a dining bench should sit about 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop and be short enough to tuck under between the legs.
- Living room: a backless upholstered bench works under a window or opposite a sofa where a chair would block the view.
Faux leather wipes clean and suits entries and dining rooms. Linen, cotton blends and boucle feel softer in bedrooms but benefit from a fabric protector and regular vacuuming. Tufted tops add detail; flat tops are easier to sit on and stack items on. For more on entries, read entryway ideas or browse bedroom furniture.
