How to choose bar and counter height chairs
The most important number is the gap between seat and surface. Aim for 10 to 12 inches between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter or bar.
- Counter height: for surfaces around 36 inches tall, choose seats about 24 to 27 inches high.
- Bar height: for surfaces around 42 inches tall, choose seats about 28 to 33 inches high.
- Adjustable: a good choice if you are unsure or the chairs may move between rooms.
- Spacing: allow roughly 26 to 30 inches from the center of one chair to the next, more for swivel or armed chairs.
